Salmonella Heidelberg Outbreak Linked to Schreiber Kosher Broiled Chicken Livers
As of November 21, 2011, a total of 179 illnesses caused by the foodborne pathogen Salmonella Heidelberg have been linked to eating contaminated “kosher broiled chicken livers” produced by Schreiber Processing Corporation, NY. Schreiber conducts business as Alle Processing Corporation/MealMart Company.
Six states have reported confirmed Salmonella outbreak cases, with the first confirmed illness beginning on about March 13, 2011.
According to the CDC, the number of persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg reported by state is as follows: New York (99), New Jersey (61), Pennsylvania (10), Maryland (6), Ohio (2), and Minnesota (1). Many of these illnesses have resulted in hospitalization.
The Chicken Liver Recall
On November 8, 2011, the FDA announced that Schreiber Processing Corporation, Maspeth, N.Y., had issued a recall for its broiled chicken liver products because the products had been linked to a cluster of Salmonella infections in New Jersey and New York. Illnesses were also linked to retail store chopped liver made from the recalled chicken liver products.
Although the recalled chicken livers are labeled “broiled” and may appear to be ready-to-eat, the product is only partially cooked and requires further cooking before eating. Consumers may have been confused by the packaging.
The connection between the recalled chicken livers and the outbreak was confirmed after New York public health officials isolated the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg from samples of the broiled chicken livers from the Schreiber processing plant, samples of the kosher broiled chicken livers” and chopped liver prepared by retail stores.
The products subject to recall include:
- 10 lb. boxes with two, 5 lb. bags of "Meal Mart Broiled Chicken Liver; Made for Further Thermal Processing"
- 10 lb. boxes of loose packed "Chicken Liver Broiled"
Each bag or box bears the establishment number "P-787" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The recalled “kosher broiled chicken livers” were sold in retail stores and may have been used in other prepared foods.
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacterium capable of causing a serious and sometimes life-threatening infection known as salmonellosis. One of the most common foodborne illnesses, it occurs when food contaminated by Salmonella is consumed.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) may include diarrhea (sometime bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food. While most people recover within 4-7 days, diarrhea may become so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In more severe cases, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and other body sites. This can result in death, unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness.
Diagnosis of Salmonella Infection
